Mauritius is a small island with big views. From misty gorges and volcanic craters to sea cliffs and mountain tops, the best lookouts are easy to reach. Here are the finest, with advice on when to go for the best light.
Roadside viewpoints
- Black River Gorges Viewpoint: a sweeping view over the forested gorges to the south-west coast. See the park guide.
- Chamarel Viewpoint: lookouts over the plateau and the sea. Read about Chamarel.
- Alexandra Falls: a deep valley view with a slender waterfall.
- Trou aux Cerfs: a view from the crater rim. See the crater guide.
Coastal viewpoints
- Gris Gris: waves crashing on black cliffs in the south. See the south coast guide.
- Cap Malheureux: the red-roofed church with Coin de Mire. Read the guide.
- Albion Lighthouse: a sunset favourite on the west coast. See Albion.
Mountain and city views
- Le Pouce summit: a view of Port Louis and the Moka range. See the hike guide.
- Le Morne Brabant: a world-class view of the lagoon from the top. Read the guide.
- Fort Adelaide: the best view over Port Louis. See the guide.
Highland viewpoints are often hidden in cloud by midday. Go early and have a backup plan if it is misty.
Best sunset spots
- Le Morne public beach: the mountain glows as the sun sets over the lagoon.
- Flic en Flac and Tamarin: long west-facing beaches with open views of the horizon.
- Albion lighthouse: red-and-white tower on a cliff, quiet and photogenic.
- Pointe aux Canonniers: a calm spot near Grand Baie for the evening light.
Best sunrise spots
The east coast faces the rising sun. Belle Mare, Palmar and Poste Lafayette have long open beaches where the sun comes up over the reef, and the light on the lagoon is beautiful in the first hour of the day.
Views from the air and sea
Some views are only possible from above or from the water. A helicopter flight shows the underwater waterfall illusion off Le Morne and the colours of the lagoon, while a catamaran or kayak trip gives the best views of Le Morne Brabant rising from the sea.
