Rochester Falls, Gris Gris and Souillac: A Day on the South Coast

Chamarel Waterfall - photo 3

The south coast is wilder and quieter than the beach resorts, and it is full of drama. A short route links the basalt curtain of Rochester Falls, the crashing waves of Gris Gris and the sleepy village of Souillac. It is an easy half-day outing with strong photos.

Rochester Falls

The water here pours over dark blocks of basalt, forming a wide, dramatic curtain of falling water, surrounded by green. A short walk from the car park brings you to a viewing area. Visit in the morning for the best light and a fuller flow after rain.

Gris Gris

At Gris Gris, the island’s southern shore, ocean waves smash into black cliffs, sending up spray. A rock formation known as the weeping rock is the best-known spot. There is a viewing path along the cliff, but the sea is dangerous, so do not swim and stay behind safe areas.

Souillac

This small town has a pretty seafront, a cemetery by the sea and the house museum of the poet Robert Edward Hart. It is a peaceful place for a snack or a coffee before you continue.

Why the south coast feels different

Most of Mauritius is protected by a coral reef that keeps the lagoon calm. Along much of the south coast there is no reef, so the Indian Ocean rolls straight in from Antarctica and breaks against black volcanic cliffs. That is why the scenery here is so wild, why the wind is stronger and why the beaches feel empty compared with the north and east. Sugar cane fields run almost to the sea, and small fishing villages sit in the few sheltered bays.

Suggested half-day route

  1. Rochester Falls (morning): arrive early, when the light is soft and few people are around. Allow 30 to 45 minutes.
  2. Souillac village: walk along the seafront garden and see the old church and the views over the river mouth.
  3. Gris Gris and La Roche qui Pleure: watch the waves from the cliff-top lawns and walk to the viewpoint over the weeping rock.
  4. Lunch: eat at a seafront restaurant in Souillac, or continue west to Saint Aubin for lunch on the estate.

How to get there

The south coast is about 30 to 45 minutes from Mahebourg and Blue Bay, and around an hour and a half from Grand Baie. Buses run between Souillac and the main towns, but connections are slow, so a car or a private driver is the easiest way to see all three stops in one go. If you are staying in Bel Ombre, Souillac is a short drive east along the coast road.

Best time to go

The south is beautiful all year, but the drier months from May to December give the best chance of clear skies. Rochester Falls is at its fullest after a few days of rain, while Gris Gris is most dramatic on windy days, when the swell is high.

Nearby

  • La Vanille Nature Park, with its giant tortoises and crocodiles.
  • Domaine de Saint Aubin, for vanilla, tea and rum.
  • Bois Cheri tea estate, inland on the plateau.
  • The beaches and nature reserve of Bel Ombre.

Tips

  • Never swim at Gris Gris, as currents are very strong.
  • Rocks near the falls are slippery, so wear shoes with grip.
  • Go with a driver or a guide, as the south is less served by buses.
