Trou aux Cerfs: The Volcanic Crater in Curepipe

Trou aux Cerfs - photo 1

Trou aux Cerfs is a perfectly round crater in the town of Curepipe, now covered in greenery. A short walk takes you to the rim for views over the central plateau, the mountains and, on clear days, the distant coast. It is an easy, free stop and one of the most iconic sights of the highlands.

What it is

The crater formed by volcanic activity long ago and is now dormant. The name means hollow of the deer, because deer were once hunted here. A small lake and thick plants fill the bottom, and a path runs around the rim.

What to do

  • Walk around the rim for the views.
  • Take photos of the crater and the plateau.
  • Stop at nearby Curepipe for lunch and shopping. See our Curepipe guide.

A short history

Trou aux Cerfs is one of several volcanic craters on the central plateau. It is thought to have been active many thousands of years ago, and it is now considered dormant. Today the rim is a public park with benches, a paved road and a viewing platform, and it is a favourite spot for locals who come for an early-morning walk or a jog.

What you see from the rim

  • The town of Curepipe and the surrounding plateau.
  • The Moka range and, on clear days, the peaks of the south-west.
  • The forest-covered crater floor with its small lake.
  • On very clear days, glimpses of the sea in the distance.

How to get there

The crater is in the centre of Curepipe, about 30 minutes from Port Louis and 30 to 40 minutes from the airport. You can drive up to the rim and park there. The walk around the top is about 1 km and takes around 20 to 30 minutes.

The weather in Curepipe

Curepipe is one of the coolest and rainiest towns in Mauritius, because of its altitude. It is often several degrees cooler than the coast, and clouds can roll in quickly. Bring a light jacket and plan your visit for the morning, when the views are usually clearest.

Nearby

  • Curepipe Botanical Garden and the town centre.
  • Domaine des Aubineaux, a colonial house and tea estate.
  • Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) and the Black River Gorges, on the way south-west.

Tips

  • Visit in the morning for clearer views, as cloud often builds later.
  • Take a light rain jacket.
  • You cannot climb down into the crater.
