Le Pouce, named for its thumb-like summit, is one of the most popular hikes in Mauritius. The climb is manageable, the views over Port Louis and the Moka range are superb and the route is short enough for a morning.
About the hike
The path climbs steadily through forest and open ridge, with a steeper final section near the top. From the summit, you see the capital, the harbour, the neighbouring peaks and, on clear days, the ocean beyond. It is the third-highest mountain on the island.
Combine with
Make it a morning hike and then visit Eureka or the capital. See the Moka guide for more.
The route step by step
Most hikers start from the village of Saint Pierre or from the Petit Verger side near Moka, where a track leads up through sugar cane and then forest. The first part is a steady climb on a wide path. Higher up, the trail becomes narrower and follows the ridge, with open views on both sides. The last stretch to the thumb is short but steep and rocky, and you may need to use your hands in places. Allow two to three hours for the return trip at an easy pace, plus time at the top.
What you see from the top
- Port Louis, the harbour and the racecourse at Champ de Mars.
- Pieter Both and the long Moka range.
- The central plateau and the town of Moka.
- On clear days, the north coast and the islands beyond Cap Malheureux.
Best time to go
The cooler, drier months from May to November are ideal. Start as early as you can, ideally at sunrise, as clouds often settle on the summit by late morning. Avoid the hike after heavy rain, when the upper section becomes muddy and slippery.
Staying safe
There is no shade on the upper ridge and no water along the way. Tell someone where you are going, stay on the main path and turn back if cloud rolls in. If you are not confident with steep, rocky ground, stop below the final section; the view is still excellent.
Tips
- Start at sunrise for the clearest views and the coolest air.
- Wear shoes with good grip, as the last section can be slippery.
- Carry water, a hat and a light rain jacket.
- Do not attempt it in rain or low cloud. The rocks become slippery.
