The deep water close to the west coast of Mauritius is home to dolphins and, at times, whales. A morning at sea can bring you face to face with some of the ocean’s most impressive animals. Here is what to expect and how to choose a responsible trip.
What you may see
The west coast has calm, deep water where marine animals gather. Dolphins are the most frequent sight, with groups of spinner dolphins often leaping and spinning near the boat. Sperm whales are seen off this coast, and humpback whales pass through the Indian Ocean in the cooler months, so sightings are possible but depend on the season and luck.
When to go
Go early, when the sea is calm and the animals are active. Dolphins can be seen through much of the year. For whales, ask your operator about recent sightings, as their presence changes through the seasons. See our guide to swimming with dolphins.
How a trip works
- Early start: boats usually leave soon after sunrise from the west coast.
- Searching: the crew scans the sea and talks to other boats to find the animals.
- Observing: the boat approaches slowly and keeps a respectful distance.
- Return and breakfast: many trips finish with a swim, snorkel or light meal.
Choosing a responsible operator
- Choose a boat that follows national guidelines and keeps its distance from the animals.
- Avoid trips that chase animals, separate groups or approach in a crowd of boats.
- Look for small groups, knowledgeable guides and clear safety briefings.
These are wild animals, so sightings are never guaranteed. A good operator will share what they see honestly and may offer a snorkel stop or a second trip if the animals do not appear.
What to bring
