On a hill above Port Louis stands Fort Adelaide, also known as the Citadel. It offers the best view of the capital, with the harbour and mountain ridges spread out below. It is a short, easy stop and particularly lovely in the late afternoon.
A brief history
The British built the fort in the 1830s to protect the capital and keep order, and it was named after the wife of King William IV. It stands on a hill overlooking the harbour, and its thick stone walls are still intact.

The fort stands on Petite Montagne, a hill above the city centre. You can drive up to the gate or walk up from the city in around 15 to 20 minutes. Entry is generally free. The walls and cannons are open to explore, and there are information panels about the fort’s history.
Events at the Citadel
The fort is sometimes used for concerts and cultural events, when the courtyard is lit up at night. Check local listings if you are in Port Louis for a few days.
