Mont Choisy, Mauritius: One of the Longest Beaches in the North

Turquoise lagoon and pale sand at Trou aux Biches beach on the north coast of Mauritius, seen from above

Mont Choisy is one of the longest and loveliest public beaches in the north, a broad ribbon of white sand backed by shady casuarina trees. It is perfect for long walks, picnics and sunset swims, and it feels more local than the busy resort strips.

Why visit Mont Choisy

The beach stretches for a couple of kilometres, so there is always space to find a quiet spot. The water is shallow and calm, and the casuarina trees give welcome shade. On weekends, local families arrive with picnics, which adds to the friendly atmosphere.

Things to do

  • Take a long beach walk, early in the morning or at sunset.
  • Swim in the calm, shallow water.
  • Grab street food from the stalls and kiosks near the entrance.
  • Try paddle boarding or kayaking.

Nearby

Mont Choisy is next to Trou aux Biches and a short drive from Grand Baie, so you can combine a quiet beach day with dinner in town. For more beaches, read our beach guide.

The beach

Mont Choisy stretches for around 3 km of white sand lined with casuarina trees, between Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie. The water is calm and clear, and the trees give natural shade, which is rare on Mauritian beaches. On weekdays it is quiet; on Sundays local families arrive with picnics, music and barbecues.

A bit of history

In 1922 the first airplane flight in Mauritius took off from Mont Choisy, and a small monument near the beach marks the spot. The land behind the beach was once a sugar estate and is now a residential and golf area.

Getting around the north

The north coast is compact, and Grand Baie is the main hub for shops, restaurants and banks. Taxis are easy to find, buses run along the coast road, and many visitors hire a car for a few days. Distances are short: most northern beaches are within 15 to 20 minutes of each other.

Things to do nearby

  • Water sports and boat trips from Grand Baie.
  • Golf at the Mont Choisy golf course.
  • Catamaran cruises to the northern islands.

Tips

  • There is little shade away from the trees, so bring a hat and sunscreen.
  • The sea floor has patches of seagrass in places, so water shoes are helpful.
  • Weekdays are quieter and weekends livelier.
