Balaclava is a quiet stretch of the north-west coast, known for the Turtle Bay marine park, clear water and some of the area’s best resorts. It is calm and peaceful, yet it is close to Port Louis and the Botanical Garden at Pamplemousses.
Why visit Balaclava
The bay is protected, so the water is calm and clear, with healthy coral and a good chance to meet turtles when snorkelling. The area is residential and peaceful, with fewer shops and nightlife than Grand Baie, which suits relaxed holidays.
Things to do
- Snorkel at Turtle Bay: swim among fish and, with luck, turtles. Read about underwater activities.
- Visit Pamplemousses: the Botanical Garden is a short drive away.
- Explore Port Louis: the capital is within 30 minutes. See our Port Louis guide.
- Relax at your resort: spas, pools and sunset terraces.
Where to stay
Balaclava has well-regarded resorts such as the InterContinental Mauritius Resort Balaclava Fort and The Westin Turtle Bay. See our hotels and resorts.
Do not feed or chase turtles. Stay at a respectful distance and keep your hands off the coral.
Balaclava Marine Park
Turtle Bay is part of the Balaclava Marine Park, a protected area where fishing is restricted. The calm, clear water is excellent for snorkelling, with coral gardens and plenty of fish close to shore. Despite the name, sea turtles are only occasionally seen today.
Historic ruins
The Balaclava area has the ruins of an old French shipyard and fort, some of them within hotel grounds by the river mouth. They are a reminder that this coast was important to the French in the 18th century.
Getting around
Balaclava is around 20 minutes from Port Louis and 15 to 20 minutes from Grand Baie. Most visitors stay at one of the resorts and take taxis or tours for day trips.
