Moka is a green district on the central plateau, at the foot of the Moka mountain range. It is known for its historic Creole house, mountain walks, cool air and easy access to the capital. It is a lovely change of pace from the beach.
Why visit Moka
The district sits among sugar cane fields and forest, surrounded by peaks. It has a quieter, more rural feel than the nearby towns, with some historic homes and a university campus. It is also a great base for hiking.
Things to do
- Eureka: a beautifully preserved 19th-century Creole mansion with gardens and a waterfall nearby.
- Hiking: trails lead into the Moka range, including the walk up Le Pouce, the island’s third-highest peak, with sweeping views.
- Shopping: Bagatelle Mall is one of the largest shopping centres on the island.
- Combine with Port Louis: the capital is only 20 minutes away. See our Port Louis guide.
Hike Le Pouce early in the morning, before cloud rolls in. Wear shoes with good grip and carry water.
Moka and the Le Clezio family
Moka was one of the first areas of the plateau to be settled, and wealthy families built country houses here to enjoy the cooler air. Eureka, the most famous, was home to the Le Clezio family for generations.
A centre of learning
Moka is home to the University of Mauritius, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute and its Museum of Indian Immigration. The State House at Réduit, the official residence of the President, is nearby.
