Swimming with Dolphins in Mauritius: What to Expect
Dolphin trips are one of the most popular mornings in Mauritius. Here is what to expect and how to make it a good experience for you and the animals.
Where and when
Most trips leave from the west coast near Tamarin and Black River, early in the morning when the dolphins are most active. Sightings are common all year, but they are wild animals and nothing can be guaranteed.
What happens on the trip
A small boat takes you out to where the dolphins are resting or feeding. If they are relaxed, you may be able to slip into the water quietly with a mask and snorkel. If they are not, the crew will move on rather than force an encounter.
Choose a responsible operator
- Small groups and a maximum number of boats around the dolphins.
- No chasing, touching or feeding.
- Crew who put the animals first, even when it means a shorter swim.
What to bring
Swimwear, a towel, reef-safe sun cream, a hat and a light layer for the boat ride. Take seasickness tablets beforehand if you are prone to it.
