Tamarin is a laid-back bay on the west coast, framed by mountains and known for surfing, dolphin trips and traditional salt pans. It has a bohemian, outdoorsy feel that suits active travellers and anyone who prefers a quieter pace.
Why visit Tamarin
The bay sits beneath the Tamarin and Rivière Noire mountains, so the scenery is dramatic. It is the island’s best-known surf area, and early morning boats leave for dolphin and whale watching. The village is small, with a few restaurants and shops.
Things to do
- Surfing: the reef break at Tamarin Bay is well known. See our water sports guide.
- Dolphins and whales: boats leave at dawn. Read about whale watching.
- Salt pans: traditional salt-making pans where you can see salt harvested by hand.
- Hiking: trails lead into the hills, and the Black River Gorges are close by.
Where to eat and stay
Expect relaxed cafes and seafood restaurants, with sunsets over the bay. Accommodation includes guest houses, apartments and nearby resorts. See our hotels and resorts for options.
Surf conditions are strongest in the cooler months and are for experienced surfers. Ask locally before you paddle out.
The salt pans
Tamarin is home to traditional salt pans, where sea water is pumped into shallow basins and left to evaporate in the sun. Workers rake the salt by hand. The pans are on the road between Tamarin and Black River and make an unusual photo stop.
Dolphins in Tamarin Bay
Spinner and bottlenose dolphins rest in Tamarin Bay and along the west coast in the early morning. Boat trips and kayak tours go out to watch them. Choose an operator who keeps a respectful distance and limits time with each pod.
Surf
Tamarin was once famous for its surf break, which appeared in surf films in the 1970s. Waves are less consistent today, but surfers still come in the winter months when the swell is bigger.
