Mauritius Beaches: Where to Swim, Snorkel and Watch the Sunset
Every coast of Mauritius has something different to offer, and the best beach for you depends on what you want to do there.
North: Trou aux Biches and Mont Choisy
Long, gentle beaches with calm, shallow water that suit families and easy swimming. The north also has the island’s liveliest restaurants and nightlife around Grand Baie.
West: Flic en Flac and Tamarin
Sunsets are the star on the west coast. Flic en Flac has a long beach and plenty of places to eat, while Tamarin is a favourite for dolphin trips and surf.
East: Belle Mare and Trou d’Eau Douce
The east coast has wide, quiet beaches and some of the clearest lagoons on the island. It can be breezier, which many people enjoy. It is also the gateway to Ile aux Cerfs.
South: Le Morne and Riambel
Dramatic scenery under Le Morne Brabant mountain and great conditions for kitesurfing. Some southern beaches have stronger currents, so ask locally before swimming.
Simple beach tips
- Wear reef-safe sun cream and reef shoes if you are snorkelling near coral.
- Go early or late for the softest light and the fewest people.
- Public beaches are open to everyone, but hotel beaches can be busier.
