PADI or CMAS?

Both are internationally recognised. PADI is the most widely known, with a flexible structure and many centres worldwide. CMAS is the world confederation of underwater activities and is popular in Europe. Either certificate will let you dive in Mauritius and abroad, so choose the centre you feel most comfortable with.

What to expect on a course

  1. Theory: short lessons on safety, equipment and how pressure affects the body, often by video or e-learning.
  2. Pool or shallow water: you practise skills such as clearing your mask and breathing underwater.
  3. Open water dives: you complete your dives on the reef with an instructor.

Health and age

You must complete a medical questionnaire. If you have a condition such as asthma, heart problems or ear problems, you may need a doctor’s approval. Minimum ages and rules differ by course and agency, so check with your centre. Children can try shallow-water experiences, while older children can take junior courses.

Choosing a dive centre

  • Look for PADI or CMAS accreditation and qualified instructors.
  • Ask about group size. Smaller groups mean more attention.
  • Check that the equipment is modern, clean and well maintained.
  • Read recent reviews and ask about safety procedures.
Before you fly

Do not fly for at least 18 to 24 hours after your last dive. Plan your course early in your trip, not on the last day.
