History of the estate

Saint Aubin dates back to the early 19th century, when sugar was the backbone of the Mauritian economy. Like many estates in the south, it grew cane, processed it into sugar and later into rum. Today the house and gardens have been restored to show visitors how the estate families lived, and the land is still farmed.

The vanilla story

Vanilla is an orchid that, outside its native Mexico, must be pollinated by hand. The technique was discovered on the neighbouring island of Réunion in the 19th century, and it is still used today. At Saint Aubin you can see the vines and learn how the green pods are cured into the fragrant black vanilla used in cooking.

Rum tasting

The estate produces agricultural rum from fresh sugar cane juice, as well as flavoured rums made with local fruits and spices. Tastings show the difference between white, aged and arranged (infused) rums.
