His story

Pere Laval was a French doctor who became a priest. He came to Mauritius in 1841, a few years after slavery was abolished, and spent more than 20 years working among the freed people, teaching, healing and helping them rebuild their lives. He died on 9 September 1864. He was beatified in 1979.

The pilgrimage

Every year on 9 September, tens of thousands of people of all backgrounds and religions visit his shrine to pray, give thanks and ask for help. Many walk long distances. The atmosphere is quiet and moving, though the area is very busy.

Visiting the shrine

  • Dress modestly and be quiet inside the church.
  • Avoid the pilgrimage day if you want a peaceful visit.
  • Take a taxi or tour, as parking is limited when it is busy.

His legacy

Père Laval arrived in Mauritius soon after the abolition of slavery, at a time when many freed people were poor and excluded. He learned Creole, taught and cared for the sick, and is credited with tens of thousands of conversions. After his death in 1864, his tomb became a place of prayer. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1979, and the Pope visited his shrine during his trip to Mauritius in 1989.

The shrine today

The tomb is in a chapel next to the church of Sainte-Croix. A painted effigy of Père Laval lies on the tomb, and visitors leave flowers and candles. A small museum nearby tells his story through photographs and personal items.

The September pilgrimage

On the night of 8 to 9 September, tens of thousands of pilgrims walk to Sainte-Croix from across the island, many through the night. Masses are held throughout the day, and people of all faiths come to pray for healing and protection. Roads around Port Louis are very busy, so plan ahead if you are travelling that week.
