Museums are a great choice for a rainy day, and in Mauritius they tell the stories of stamps, sugar, battles, immigration and the dodo. Here are ten of the best, with a short note on what makes each worth a visit.
1. Blue Penny Museum
Home of the island’s rarest stamps and a fine introduction to its history. See our Blue Penny Museum guide.
2. Natural History Museum, Port Louis
Displays on island wildlife and the dodo, including a skeleton. A good stop for families.
3. Aapravasi Ghat Interpretation Centre
Exhibits about the immigration depot and the arrival of indentured labourers. Read the guide.
4. Mahebourg Naval and History Museum
Relics of the Battle of Grand Port and the colonial period. See the museum guide.
5. L’Aventure du Sucre
A sugar museum in a former sugar mill near Pamplemousses, telling the story of the crop that shaped the island, with tastings.
6. Mauritius Postal Museum
A small museum on postal history in Port Louis. See our guide.
7. Martello Tower Museum
A British coastal tower on the west coast with views and exhibits. Read the guide.
8. Museum of Indian Immigration
Shows the life of Indian labourers. See the museum guide.
9. Frederik Hendrik Museum
Built on the site of the first Dutch fort at Vieux Grand Port, with artefacts from the early settlement.
10. Robert Edward Hart Museum
The seaside house of a Mauritian poet in Souillac, with a quiet, atmospheric garden by the sea.
Group your visits by area. Spend a day in Port Louis for three museums, or a day in the south-east for Mahebourg and Vieux Grand Port.
Plan museum days by area
- Port Louis: Blue Penny Museum, Natural History Museum, Postal Museum and Aapravasi Ghat are all within walking distance. One full day covers them comfortably.
- The north: L’Aventure du Sucre, close to the Pamplemousses garden.
- The south-east: the Naval Museum in Mahebourg and the Frederik Hendrik Museum at Vieux Grand Port.
- The west: the Martello Tower at La Preneuse.
- Moka: the Museum of Indian Immigration and Eureka house.
Perfect for a rainy day
Mauritius gets short tropical showers, especially from December to April. Museums are the best way to fill a wet afternoon, and Port Louis is ideal because the museums, the Caudan Waterfront shops and Odysseo Oceanarium are all indoors and close together.
With children
L’Aventure du Sucre and Odysseo have the most interactive displays. The dodo skeleton at the Natural History Museum is a favourite with children, and the Martello Tower is fun to climb.
