In the cool highland town of Curepipe, Domaine des Aubineaux is a graceful colonial mansion with a verandah, antique furniture and a tea house. It is a small, peaceful stop that gives you a look at the life of wealthy families in the 19th century.
What to see
The house is a fine example of the colonial architecture of the plateau, with high ceilings, wooden floors and large windows. Inside are antique furniture and objects, and the gardens are pleasant for a stroll.
Tea
The estate has a tea room where you can taste Mauritian teas and enjoy a snack. For a bigger tea experience, visit Bois Cheri.
Plan your visit
It fits well into a plateau day with Curepipe and Trou aux Cerfs. Check opening times and whether a guided visit is needed.
History of the house
Domaine des Aubineaux was built in the 19th century and was home to a family of tea planters on the cool central plateau. The mansion is part of the Mauritius tea route, which links it with the Bois Cheri tea estate and the Saint Aubin estate in the south.
Colonial architecture
The house is typical of Mauritian colonial homes, built to cope with heat and heavy rain: a wide veranda wraps around the building, the high ceilings and tall windows keep air moving, and the gardens are planted with tropical trees and flowers. Inside, period furniture and family photographs show daily life more than a century ago.
Perfume and essential oils
The estate is also known for producing essential oils and fragrances from local plants. Ask about the small shop, where you can buy oils, teas and souvenirs.
