Mauritius offers memorable encounters with wildlife, from giant tortoises and crocodiles to dolphins and rare birds. The best experiences are well run, small scale and respectful of the animals. Here is where to go, and how to choose responsibly.

- Casela Nature Parks: safari drives, lemurs and adventure activities. See the guide.
- La Vanille Nature Park: giant tortoises and crocodiles. See the guide.

Ethical tips
- Choose operators that give animals space and follow national guidelines.
- Avoid experiences that involve riding or heavy handling.
- Do not feed wild animals or take them from their habitat.
- Ask how the operator contributes to conservation.
Marine wildlife
The sea around Mauritius is home to spinner and bottlenose dolphins, which are often seen in the bays of the west coast in the morning. Humpback whales pass the island between roughly June and October, and sperm whales are seen year round further offshore. Turtles, rays and countless reef fish can be seen while snorkelling in the lagoons.
Rare birds and endemic species
Mauritius lost many species after human settlement, including the famous dodo. Today, conservation work has saved several birds from extinction. You can look for the pink pigeon, the echo parakeet and the Mauritius kestrel in the Black River Gorges and on Ile aux Aigrettes, ideally with a guide.
How to choose a responsible experience
- Prefer experiences where animals are observed in large, natural spaces.
- For dolphin trips, choose operators who keep their distance and limit the number of boats.
- Follow staff instructions and age limits, which are there for your safety and the animals’ welfare.
- Never feed or touch wild animals without permission.
Best for families
For young children, the petting farm and giraffe experience at Casela, the giant tortoises at La Vanille and a glass-bottom boat trip are easy and memorable. Older children and teens often enjoy safari rides and the Eco Rider.
