Why visit Blue Bay

The bay is protected as a marine park, so the coral and fish life are very good. The water is calm and shallow, which makes it ideal for children and beginners. The public beach is long, with white sand and pleasant shade.

Things to do

  • Snorkelling: boats take you to the best coral spots, and many beaches have good snorkelling from the shore.
  • Glass-bottom boats: see the reef without getting wet. See our underwater activities guide.
  • Island trips: combine with Ile aux Aigrettes and Ile de la Passe.
  • Pointe d’Esny: a quiet nearby area with mangroves and a lovely beach.

Where to stay

Choose a guest house or small hotel nearby, or stay in Mahebourg. For resorts, see our hotels and resorts.

Blue Bay Marine Park

Blue Bay was declared a marine park to protect its coral gardens and fish. It is also recognised as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Rules forbid fishing and collecting shells or coral, and boats follow marked channels. The coral is easy to see from glass-bottom boats or with a snorkel and mask.

The islands nearby

  • Ile des Deux Cocos: a small island with a beach and colonial-style villa, open for day visits.
  • Ile aux Aigrettes: a nature reserve with native forest, giant tortoises and rare birds, visited on guided tours.

Best time to visit

Visit on a calm, sunny day for the best visibility. Mornings are quieter, and weekdays are less busy than weekends, when local families come to the public beach.

Tips

  • Go in the morning for calm water and fewer people.
  • Take reef-safe sunscreen and do not touch the coral.
  • Weekends and public holidays are busier with local families.

Frequently asked questions

Is Blue Bay good for snorkelling?

Yes. It is one of the best snorkelling spots on the island because of the protected coral.

Is Blue Bay good for children?

Yes. The water is shallow and calm.

How far is it from the airport?

About 15 minutes by road.

Can I snorkel without a boat?

Yes, from the public beach, but the best coral is further out. A glass-bottom boat with a snorkel stop is the easiest way.
