Gabriel Island and Flat Island

NorthDay cruise from Grand Baie

These two islets lie off the north coast and are the stars of many catamaran days. You anchor in a clear lagoon, snorkel over coral, swim from white sand and often eat a barbecue lunch on board or on the beach. Flat Island (Ile Plate) is known for its old lighthouse and quiet beaches.

Coin de Mire

NorthNature reserveBoat viewing and snorkelling

This steep, wedge-shaped island rises from the sea off the northern tip of Mauritius. It is a protected reserve, so landing is not normally allowed, but boats pass close to the cliffs and stop nearby for snorkelling and diving. It is home to seabirds and is a striking sight at sunset.

Ile d’Ambre

North-eastMangroveKayak or boat

A quiet, uninhabited islet in the north-east with mangroves and shallow, sheltered water. It is a favourite for kayak and paddle-board trips and for travellers who want a calmer, less crowded experience.

Ile aux Benitiers

South-westDolphin tripsLagoon swim

Set in the Le Morne lagoon, this small island is a popular stop on west-coast excursions. Many trips combine early dolphin watching with a swim and snorkel here, followed by a seaside lunch. The backdrop of Le Morne Brabant is magnificent.

Ile aux Aigrettes

South-eastNature reserveGuided visit

This conservation island near Mahebourg protects some of the last coastal forest of Mauritius. Visits are by guided walk and show you giant tortoises, pink pigeons and the careful restoration of native ebony and other trees. It is perfect for families and nature lovers.

Ile de la Passe

South-eastHistoryBoat trip

A small rocky islet at the entrance to the Grand Port bay, with the remains of a fort. It was the setting for the Battle of Grand Port in 1810, the French naval victory over the British. It is often visited with a trip around the south-east lagoon.

Round Island and Serpent Island

These rocky islets off the north coast are strictly protected nature reserves and are home to rare reptiles and seabirds. They are not open to visitors, but you may see them from the water on a northern cruise.

Tips for visiting the islets

  • Choose a licensed operator, and check what is included, such as lunch, drinks and snorkel gear.
  • Do not touch or stand on coral, and take all litter back with you.
  • Respect reserve rules. Many islets are protected and landing is limited.
  • Go in the morning, when the sea is calmer.
Local tip

Pick the islet that matches your mood. For snorkelling and a beach lunch, choose Gabriel and Flat Island. For wildlife, choose Ile aux Aigrettes. For a lazy beach day, choose Ile aux Cerfs.

Frequently asked questions

Which islet is best for snorkelling?

Gabriel Island and Flat Island in the north have clear water and good coral. Coin de Mire is also excellent, but you view it from the boat or the water only.

Can I visit Coin de Mire?

Landing is usually not allowed because it is a nature reserve, but boat trips pass close by, and snorkelling and diving are offered nearby.

Is it better to join a group or go private?

Group cruises are good value and sociable. A private boat gives you flexible timing and quiet spots, which is ideal for couples and families.

What should I bring?

Sunscreen, hat, towel, water shoes, swimwear and a waterproof phone pouch.
