What to Eat in Mauritius: Street Food and Island Flavours

Mauritian food blends Indian, Chinese, African and French influences, and some of the best meals are cheap and simple.

Start with street food

  • Dholl puri: soft flatbread filled with ground split peas, served with curry and chutney.
  • Gateaux piment: crunchy chilli fritters made from lentils.
  • Boulettes: steamed dumplings in a light broth.
  • Farata and roti: flaky breads wrapped around curry.

Restaurant classics

Try a rougaille, a tomato-based creole stew with fish or sausage, and biryani, which is a serious dish in Mauritius. Fresh seafood grilled with lime is easy to find on the coast.

Sweet things and drinks

Look for alouda, a cold milky drink with basil seeds, and fresh pineapple with chilli and salt. For something stronger, local rum is a popular souvenir.

Where to eat

The Central Market in Port Louis and roadside stalls in villages are perfect for a quick lunch. Ask your hotel where the locals go, and try one new dish a day.
