Mauritius makes entry easy for many nationalities, with visa-free stays for tourism. Still, you must carry the right documents, and the rules can change. This guide explains the basics so you arrive prepared and relaxed.
Who needs a visa?
Citizens of India, the UK, the EU, the US and many other countries can visit Mauritius for tourism without a visa. Visa-exempt visitors are normally allowed to stay for a limited period, often up to 90 days, subject to the immigration officer’s decision.
Some nationalities must apply for a visa before they travel. Visa rules depend on your passport, so always check the current list on the official Passport and Immigration Office website before booking.
Entry rules change. This guide is for general information only. Always confirm the latest requirements with the official immigration authority or your airline before you travel.
Documents to carry
- A passport valid for your whole stay. Many airlines expect at least six months of validity, so check before you fly.
- A confirmed return or onward ticket.
- Proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking, or the address where you will stay.
- Proof of sufficient funds, such as a card, bank statement or cash.
- Any online arrival or health form that the authorities require. These requirements have changed over time, so check before you travel.
Keep printed or offline copies of your hotel booking, return ticket and insurance. Immigration queues are smoother when your documents are ready.
What happens on arrival
- Immigration: an officer checks your passport and may ask about your stay and accommodation.
- Baggage: collect your bags, then go through customs.
- Customs: declare restricted items. Fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, plants and some medicines are controlled, and there are limits on alcohol and tobacco.
- Meet your driver: if you have pre-booked a transfer, your driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall.
Flying from India
Direct flights connect several Indian cities with Mauritius. If you are travelling from Chennai, see our guide to flights from Chennai to Mauritius. Remember that Mauritius is one and a half hours behind India.
Travelling with children
Carry each child’s passport. If a child travels with one parent or another adult, airlines and officers may ask for a birth certificate and a consent letter, so it is safest to bring both.
Extending your stay or staying too long
If you want to extend your stay, apply to the Passport and Immigration Office before your permitted period ends. Overstaying can lead to fines and problems on departure, so do not leave it to the last day.
