The word cyclone puts many people off a Mauritius holiday, but the reality is calmer than the headlines. Most visits during the season only see a few days of wind and heavy rain. Here is how cyclone season works, what the warnings mean and how to protect your trip.
How often do cyclones affect Mauritius?
Tropical cyclones form over the warm waters of the Indian Ocean during the southern summer. Many pass far from the island, and direct hits are uncommon. In most seasons the island sees only heavy rain and gusty days from systems that pass at a distance.
The storms people remember, such as Carol in 1960 and Gervaise in 1975, led to major improvements in building standards and early warning. Today hotels, homes and public services are well prepared.
When is the risk highest?
The official season runs from November to April. The risk is lowest at the edges, in November, December and April, and highest from January to March. If you want the warmth of summer with less risk, April is an excellent choice, as the rain is easing and the sea is still warm.
Understanding the warning classes
The Mauritius Meteorological Services issue cyclone warnings in four classes. The exact rules are announced on radio, TV and official channels, but in general they work like this:
| Class | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Class 1 | A cyclone could affect the island within roughly a day and a half | Life continues as normal. Keep an eye on updates. |
| Class 2 | The threat is closer, within about 12 hours | Finish any outings, stock water and snacks, charge your phone. |
| Class 3 | Dangerous winds are expected | Stay indoors. Most businesses, excursions and transport stop. |
| Class 4 | The storm is at or near the island | Stay inside, away from windows, until the official all-clear. |
Class 3 and 4 mean you should not drive, go to the beach or go out to sea. Follow the instructions of your hotel and the authorities.
What happens at your hotel
Resorts have clear cyclone plans. They secure outdoor areas, stock food and water, brief guests and keep staff on site. Boat trips and excursions are cancelled during warnings and resume once conditions are safe. Most visitors describe the experience as a few quiet, indoor days.
How to protect your holiday
- Book flexible rates where you can, especially from January to March.
- Buy travel insurance that covers weather delays, cancellations and interruption.
- Check the airline policy on rebooking when flights are disrupted.
- Leave buffer days at the end of your trip, especially for tight connections.
- Pack a small kit: power bank, torch, medication, a book and snacks.
Save your hotel and operator numbers in your phone, and keep digital copies of your passport, tickets and insurance in one place.
After the storm
Services usually return within a day or two. Some roads may be blocked by fallen branches, a few attractions may stay closed for a short time and the lagoon can look cloudy until the water settles. Ask your hotel or guide for updates before heading out.
