The Museum of Indian Immigration in Moka, within the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, tells the story of the people who came from India to work on the sugar estates. It brings daily life, traditions and struggles to life, and it is a natural follow-up to a visit to Aapravasi Ghat.
What you will see
- Photographs, documents and objects from the immigrant era.
- Models and displays about living and working conditions.
- Stories of the cultural traditions that the labourers brought.
Why visit
Most Mauritians have ancestors who came from India, and their story explains a great deal about the island’s language, food and festivals. Read more in our guides to Aapravasi Ghat and the history of Mauritius.
Plan your visit
The institute is in Moka, close to Eureka, so you can combine them in one half day. Check opening times before you go.
The indenture system
After slavery was abolished in 1835, sugar planters needed new workers. Between 1834 and the early 20th century, around half a million indentured labourers arrived in Mauritius, mostly from India. They signed contracts to work on the estates for a number of years, often in hard conditions. Most stayed on the island, and their descendants make up the majority of the population today.
The archives
The Mahatma Gandhi Institute keeps records of immigrants who arrived through Aapravasi Ghat, including photographs and registration documents. Many Mauritians, and visitors with Mauritian roots, come here to trace their ancestors.
