Kitesurfing at Le Morne

Le Morne is one of the world’s top kitesurfing spots. The shallow, flat lagoon is ideal for beginners, while more advanced riders can head to the wave spots on the reef. The trade winds are strongest from about June to October. Lessons are available for all levels, and instructors provide the equipment and safety gear.

Surfing in Mauritius

The south-west is the surfing heartland. Tamarin Bay is a well-known reef break, and One Eye at Le Morne attracts experienced surfers. These are reef breaks, so they are for confident surfers. Waves are strongest in the cooler months when winter swells arrive.

Paddle boarding and kayaking

The calm lagoons of the north, east and west are perfect for stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking. Go early in the morning, when the water is flat and the wind is light. Guided trips are available to quiet islets and mangroves.

Other fun options

  • Parasailing: a gentle flight over the lagoon, suitable for most ages.
  • Banana boats and tubes: great for families and groups.
  • Jet skis: available in some areas. Follow zoning rules, which protect swimmers and the reef.
  • Snorkelling and diving: see our underwater activities guide.
Local tip

If you are new to kitesurfing, book a lesson at the start of your stay, so you have time to practise in good wind.

Safety

  • Use a licensed instructor, and wear a helmet and life jacket where recommended.
  • Stay inside the marked zones. Reefs are shallow and sharp.
  • Check the wind, tide and weather before you go out.
  • Do not mix alcohol and water sports.
