La Vanille Nature Park: Giant Tortoises and Crocodiles

La Vanille Nature Park - photo 5

In the green south, La Vanille Nature Park is a family favourite. Hundreds of giant tortoises wander through the gardens, crocodiles bask by the ponds and a quiet trail winds through a tropical garden. It is a calm, easy and fascinating outing.

What to see

  • Giant tortoises: huge, slow animals that live for a very long time. You can get close, with care.
  • Nile crocodiles: see them in their ponds, and watch the feeding at set times.
  • Deer and fruit bats: in enclosures along the trail.
  • Insect collection: a display of butterflies and other insects.

Combine with

Visit the park on a south-coast day with Rochester Falls and Gris Gris. It is also a good rainy-day plan.

About the park

La Vanille started as a crocodile farm and has grown into a nature park set in thick tropical forest near Rivière des Anguilles. It is best known for its large group of giant Aldabra tortoises, which were bred here. Some of these tortoises are very old and very large, and visitors can walk among them in their enclosure.

How a visit works

Paths lead through the forest past the crocodile ponds, the tortoise enclosures and smaller animal areas. The walk is mostly flat and shaded, which makes it a good choice on a hot day. Allow around two hours, more if you want to watch a feeding or have lunch at the restaurant on site.

Good for families

  • Children love the baby tortoises and the giant ones they can stand beside.
  • The crocodile feeding is exciting to watch from a safe distance.
  • The insect collection is a good indoor stop if it rains.
  • The paths are suitable for pushchairs in most areas.

How to get there

The park is in the south, around 20 minutes from Mahebourg and the airport, and about 30 minutes from Bel Ombre. It fits well into a day on the south coast with Rochester Falls and Gris Gris.

Tips

  • Check feeding times when you arrive.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, as the paths are long.
  • Do not touch or feed animals unless staff tell you to.
