Traditions

  • Homes are cleaned and decorated with mango leaves and flowers.
  • People take a ritual oil bath and wear new clothes.
  • Families pray at home or at the temple.
  • A special dish is prepared with sweet, sour, bitter, salty, spicy and tangy tastes, reflecting that life holds many flavours.

For visitors

Ugadi is mainly a family and community festival, so it is more private than others. If you are invited, accept with thanks, and bring a small gift. You may see temples busy with worshippers. Dress modestly and behave quietly near them.

Telugu heritage in Mauritius

Telugu-speaking workers arrived in Mauritius from south India in the 19th century, during the period of indentured labour. Their descendants have kept their language, music and religious traditions alive, and Ugadi is one of the most important dates in their calendar.

The six-taste dish

The special Ugadi dish, called pachadi, mixes six flavours: sweet (jaggery), sour (tamarind), salty, bitter (neem flowers), spicy (chilli or pepper) and astringent (raw mango). Each flavour stands for a different emotion, reminding people that the new year will bring a mix of happiness, sadness, surprise and challenges.

Community celebrations

Telugu associations organise cultural shows with music, dance and readings of the new year’s predictions, known as panchanga sravanam. Temples hold special prayers, and families gather for a festive vegetarian meal.

For visitors

Ugadi is a family and community festival, so there are fewer public events than at Divali or Maha Shivaratri. If you are invited to a celebration, it is a warm and friendly occasion; dress modestly and accept food with your right hand.
