What you will see

  • The history of the postal service from the sailing-ship era.
  • Stamps from different periods, including copies of the famous Post Office issue.
  • Letters, mailboxes, uniforms and equipment.

Why it matters

Mauritius was a stop on the sea route between Europe and Asia, so letters and news arrived here by ship. The museum shows how communication shaped the island. For the rarest stamps, visit the Blue Penny Museum.

Post in Mauritius

Mauritius has a long postal history. The island’s first post office opened in the 18th century, and in 1847 Mauritius became one of the first places in the world to issue its own postage stamps, after Britain. The famous Red and Blue “Post Office” stamps from that year are among the rarest and most valuable stamps ever printed.

The building

The museum is housed in the old General Post Office, a stone building from the 19th century near the harbour. The architecture alone is worth a look, with thick walls and arches designed to keep the interior cool.
