Village life

Grand Gaube is still a working fishing village. Pirogues (wooden fishing boats) are pulled up on the beach, fishermen mend their nets and small shops sell everyday goods. It is a good place to see how many Mauritians live on the coast.

Ile d’Ambre

Ile d’Ambre, a protected island with mangroves to the south-east of Grand Gaube, is popular for kayak and speedboat trips. The island is known as the site of the wreck of the Saint Géran in 1744, which inspired the novel Paul et Virginie.

Getting around

Grand Gaube is about 20 minutes from Grand Baie. Taxis and buses link it with the main towns, but a car or driver gives you more freedom to explore the north and east.
