Renting a Car in Mauritius: Practical Tips

A car makes it easy to reach the places that tours skip. These tips make your first drive smoother.

Before you go

• Bring your driving licence. If it is not in English or French, bring an International Driving Permit.
• Traffic drives on the left.
• Book early in high season.

On the road

The main roads are in good shape, but village roads can be narrow and busy with scooters and pedestrians. Drive calmly, watch for speed limits and give yourself extra time in Port Louis.

Navigation and parking

Phone signal is good along the coast, but download an offline map for the mountains. Parking is easiest at shopping centres, the Caudan Waterfront and beaches with car parks.

Choosing the right car

A small hatchback is fine for couples. Families with luggage should choose an SUV or a minivan. If you plan to visit Chamarel and the gorges, a car with some ground clearance is more comfortable.
