Belle Mare, Mauritius: Long Beaches and East Coast Luxury

Constance Belle Mare Plage

Belle Mare has one of the finest beaches on the island, a long, wide stretch of soft white sand lined with casuarina trees. It is home to several of the east coast’s best resorts and is an ideal base for beach lovers and golfers.

Why visit Belle Mare

The long public beach and hotel beaches are among the prettiest on the island. The sea is sheltered by the reef, with shallow, turquoise water. Because it faces east, you get beautiful sunrises, and it is usually fresher than the west.

Things to do

  • Beach walks: long, quiet stretches of sand, particularly in the early morning.
  • Ile aux Cerfs: boats leave nearby. See our Ile aux Cerfs guide.
  • Golf: well-known courses are close by.
  • Water sports: paddle boarding, kayaking and sailing in the lagoon.

Where to stay

The area has several top resorts, such as Constance Belle Mare Plage and LUX* Belle Mare. See our hotels and resorts for current rates and availability.

Local tip

In the cooler months, the east coast is windier. Pack a light layer and plan snorkelling for calm mornings.

The beaches

Belle Mare and the neighbouring Palmar beach form one of the longest stretches of white sand in Mauritius, with clear, shallow water inside the reef. The public beach is popular with local families at weekends, while the resort beaches are quieter.

Wind and weather

The east coast faces the trade winds, which keep it fresh and breezy, especially from May to October. That means fewer humid days and good conditions for sailing and kitesurfing, but the sea can be a little choppier than on the west coast.

Day trips from Belle Mare

  • Ile aux Cerfs, about 15 minutes away by road and boat.
  • The Grand River South East waterfall by speedboat.
  • Golf at the courses of the east coast.
