Mahebourg is a gentle, historic port town on the south-east coast. It is close to the airport, full of local character and a gateway to quiet beaches, islands and heritage sites. It is a good place to see everyday Mauritian life away from the busy resorts.
Why visit Mahebourg
The town sits on a wide bay with views of the mountains behind. It was the first Dutch settlement on the island and later a French and British port. Today it is a relaxed town with a small, friendly centre, a waterfront promenade and a market where locals shop.
Things to do
- The Monday market: a lively market selling fruit, vegetables, spices and clothes.
- Naval and History Museum: tells the story of the Battle of Grand Port and the island’s colonial past.
- Vieux Grand Port: the site of the first Dutch settlement, with ruins and a historical walk.
- Island trips: boats go to Ile aux Aigrettes and Ile de la Passe. See our islets guide.
- Beaches: nearby Blue Bay and Pointe d’Esny have lovely sand and clear water.
Where to eat and stay
The town has simple restaurants and street food, including delicious dholl puri and fresh fish. Nearby there are guest houses and small hotels, and it is a handy choice if you arrive late or leave early. See our hotels.
History
Mahebourg was founded in 1806 by the French governor Decaen and named after Mahé de La Bourdonnais. It overlooks the bay of Grand Port, scene of the 1810 naval battle, the only French naval victory recorded on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
The waterfront
A pleasant promenade runs along the bay, with views of the lagoon, Lion Mountain and the islands. In the evening, locals gather here to fish, chat and watch the sunset.
