Mauritius is small enough to see a lot in a week, but the best trips leave room to slow down. This itinerary balances beach time with the sights people fly here for.
Days 1 and 2: Arrive and settle in
Have your transfer booked so you are not negotiating a fare after a long flight. Spend the first two days by the water. Swim, walk the beach at sunset and let the time difference wear off.
Day 3: Catamaran or dolphins
Spend a day on the water. A catamaran cruise along the coast with snorkelling stops and lunch on board is an easy first excursion. If you prefer an early start, an early-morning dolphin trip off the west coast is unforgettable.
Day 4: The south-west
Drive to Chamarel for the Seven Coloured Earth and the waterfall, then continue into the Black River Gorges National Park for viewpoints and forest walks. Finish with a sunset at Le Morne if you have the energy.
Day 5: Port Louis and the north
Wander the Central Market, stop at the Caudan Waterfront for lunch and shopping, then visit the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden before heading to the north coast for dinner.
Day 6: Ile aux Cerfs
A boat trip to this island off the east coast gives you white sand and calm turquoise water. Go early to beat the crowds.
Day 7: Free day and last-minute shopping
Keep the last day loose for a spa, a final swim or souvenirs. If you are flying out in the evening, pre-order duty-free items so the airport is stress-free.
