Duty-Free Shopping in Mauritius

What you can buy, where to buy it, and how to avoid paying more than you need to.

Most visitors to Mauritius leave with at least a bottle of rum. The smart ones leave with rum, vanilla pods, tea, and a bottle of locally-made gin that they pre-ordered duty-free and collected at the airport without any of the scrambling that usually comes with last-minute airport shopping.

Duty-free in Mauritius works slightly differently from what you might be used to. There are options both in town and at the airport, and knowing the difference saves you time, money, and the stress of dragging bottles through security.

Where can I shop duty-free in Mauritius?

There are two main options:

• Airport duty-free — Available after check-in at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport. Convenient but the selection is smaller and prices are higher than the town alternatives.
• In-town duty-free shops — Grand Baie and Port Louis (Caudan Waterfront) both have duty-free stores where you can shop at your leisure without the airport rush. Better selection, better prices, and you can take your time.

What is worth buying duty-free?

Mauritius produces a handful of things that are genuinely worth buying and that travel well:

• Rum — New Grove, Chamarel and Penny Blue are the names to look for. These are not souvenir bottles — they are serious spirits that win international awards.
• Vanilla pods — Mauritian vanilla is among the best in the world. Duty-free pricing makes it very good value compared to European supermarket prices.
• Tea — Bois Cheri produces tea in the highlands of Mauritius. The flavoured blends — vanilla, coconut, exotic fruits — are unusual and genuinely good.
• Jewellery and gems — Mauritius has a number of reputable jewellers, particularly in Port Louis. Sapphires and tanzanite from the region are popular.
• Tobacco and alcohol — Standard duty-free allowances apply. Check your home country's import limits before loading up.

Can I pre-order duty-free and collect later?

Yes, and this is honestly the smartest way to do it. Pre-ordering means you browse and pay while you are relaxed, then collect at the airport on your way out without any queuing or last-minute decisions.

It also means you are not carrying bottles around for your entire holiday. If you are buying rum or spirits, pre-order and collect — it is much less hassle.

What are the duty-free allowances when leaving Mauritius?

Mauritius imposes its own export limits, and your home country will have import limits too. As a general guide, most countries allow two litres of spirits and one litre of wine per adult traveller. Check the rules for your specific destination before you shop.

Vanilla and tea are not restricted, so stock up freely on those.

A few things to keep in mind

• Always keep your receipt. You may be asked to show proof of purchase at customs.
• Liquids bought in-town need to be packed in checked luggage, not hand luggage, unless collected airside at the airport.
• Some hotels offer duty-free concierge services. Ask at reception — it saves a trip into town.
• Prices in in-town duty-free shops are typically 10 to 20 percent lower than airport shops for the same items.
