Airport Transfers in Mauritius

What to expect when you land, how transfers work, and why it matters more than most people think.

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport sits in the south-east of Mauritius, which means that wherever your hotel is, you are going to be in the car for a while. A beach resort in the north can be 90 minutes away from the airport. Even hotels on the west coast — which feels close when you look at a map — are typically 45 minutes to an hour in traffic.

This is not a complaint about Mauritius. It is just the shape of the island and the reality of how travel works here. What it does mean is that getting your airport transfer right matters. The last thing you want after a long-haul flight is to be standing outside arrivals wondering how to get to your hotel.

What are the transfer options from the airport?

• Pre-booked private transfer — A driver meets you in the arrivals hall with your name on a board. Fixed price, no meter, no negotiating. This is the option most visitors use and the one we always recommend for families or anyone arriving late at night.
• Shared shuttle — Cheaper but you wait for other passengers and make multiple hotel drop-offs. Fine if you are on a budget and not in a hurry. Not ideal if you have young children or a lot of luggage.
• Taxi from the rank — Available outside arrivals. Prices are regulated but always agree the fare before you get in. Drivers will rarely use a meter for airport runs.
• Hotel transfer — Many 4 and 5-star hotels offer their own transfers. Comfortable but usually the most expensive option. Ask your hotel before you book elsewhere.
• Bus — Technically possible but not practical if you have luggage. The bus network does not serve the airport directly and involves changes.

How long does the journey take?

Journey times from SSR Airport depend entirely on where your hotel is:

• South coast (Blue Bay, Mahebourg) — 15 to 25 minutes. The closest area to the airport.
• East coast (Belle Mare, Ile aux Cerfs area) — 30 to 45 minutes.
• West coast (Flic en Flac, Le Morne) — 45 to 60 minutes.
• North coast (Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches) — 60 to 90 minutes depending on traffic.

Traffic around Port Louis during morning and evening rush hours can add 20 to 30 minutes to journeys heading north or west. If your flight lands between 07:00 and 09:00 or 16:00 and 18:30, factor this in.

What does a private transfer cost?

Prices vary depending on the distance and the vehicle. As a rough guide for a standard car (up to 3 passengers with luggage):

• South coast — EUR 20 to 30
• East coast — EUR 30 to 45
• West coast — EUR 40 to 55
• North coast — EUR 50 to 70

Minivan and MPV vehicles for larger groups cost more but are often better value per person than booking multiple cars. Always confirm the price includes luggage and waiting time if your flight is delayed.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

With a pre-booked private transfer, your driver monitors your flight number and adjusts the pickup time accordingly. This is one of the main advantages of booking in advance rather than taking a taxi off the rank — no awkward calls, no extra charges for waiting, no one who has given up and gone home.
